Why Christians Must Stand United

Why Christians Must Stand United

Unity is a core biblical principle. Jesus Himself prayed for believers to be “perfectly one” (John 17:23). Yet, many Christians treat unity as a nice-to-have rather than a must-have. It’s easy to think, “Unity would be great, but until others change, it’s not happening.” But unity isn’t optional—it’s essential. Here’s why.

When Jesus prayed for unity among believers, He gave a powerful reason: “so that the world may believe” (John 17:21). The way Christians love and stand together is a testimony to the truth of Jesus. When the world sees unity, it points them to Christ. But when they see division, it pushes them away. Think about it: disunity among believers can hinder others from believing the Gospel. If we want the world to know Jesus, we must prioritise unity.

Unity isn’t something we create—it’s already given through the Holy Spirit. As Paul writes, “In one Spirit we were all baptised into one body” (1 Corinthians 12:13). Our job is to maintain it. This means being humble, gentle, patient, and loving toward one another (Ephesians 4:2-3). It means focusing on what truly matters: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). It also means avoiding quarrels over personal opinions (Romans 14:1) and bearing with one another’s weaknesses (Romans 15:1).

Unity is both relational and doctrinal. We must stand together on the core truths of the Gospel while showing grace in areas of personal preference. When we let disagreements, preferences, or pride divide us, we risk undermining our witness to the world. Unity isn’t about uniformity—it’s about love, humility, and a shared commitment to Christ.

Let’s hold the line. Let’s stick together. Because when we do, the world sees Jesus. And that’s what truly matters.
