Jose Pereira was wrongfully detained and held captive in Venezuela for nearly five years, from November 21, 2017, to October 1, 2022. His only crime was that he is an American. Before he was taken hostage, he spent thirty-five years as an oil company executive and CEO of Citgo Petroleum (a US-based refineries complex and broad gas station distribution center).

“From Hero to Villain: My True Story of the CITGO 6” is a memoir like no other—a harrowing and inspiring journey through political intrigue, love, and faith. In this gripping account, Jose Angel Pereira recounts his unimaginable five years of unjust imprisonment in Venezuela, accused of being an American spy amidst the high-stakes clash between the United States and a communist regime.
This is not just a story of captivity but a testament to resilience and the indomitable human spirit. Much like Anne Frank’s poignant diary, Jose and his wife, Mervis, exchanged thousands of secret letters, clinging to hope and love as their lifeline. These letters, written in the most perilous circumstances, form the foundation of this book, offering an unfiltered window into his ordeal and the strength that carried him through it.
This is an incredible true story written from the heart! It talks volumes about how a horrible deception, that brought a lot of pain & suffering, became later a story of redemption and an amazing opportunity for spiritual growth. Don’t miss it!
This story of resilience is unlike anything I have ever read before and I was not expecting to be so enticed by the contents. If you’re a fan of tales perseverance and seeing someone succeed despite all odds, this is something you’d enjoy.
This book is an incredibly moving and powerful memoir that captures the harrowing experiences of Jose Pereira and his colleagues. This book is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to endure unimaginable hardships and emerge stronger.
I was totally and happily surprised by the type if novel I was reading. This is more of a political drama than anything else so I think that might confuse some readers picking up this novel for the first time. If you keep that in mind I think you’ll love this book.
