Shotel™ Ankle Arthrodesis Nail System

The first FDA cleared ankle arthrodesis nail system.

The Shotel™ Ankle Arthrodesis Nail System is an intramedullary (IM) nail
intended to provide compression and rigid fixation for primary ankle fusions.
The unique curved design allows an approach through the medial side
of the talus and is designed to achieve fusion at the tibiotalar joint while
allowing unrestricted motion to remain at all other joints. The Shotel™ Ankle
Arthrodesis Nail System provides a minimally invasive surgical option which
may allow early weight bearing.

Ankle Fusion (arthrodesis)

In this procedure, the bones of the ankle joint are fused together using screws, plates, or rods. This eliminates the ankle joint and creates a solid bone bridge, which can help relieve pain but sacrifices some ankle mobility.

The recovery process for ankle fusion surgery typically varies based on individual circumstances and the extent of the surgery. However, here is a general guideline.

Hospital Stay

Ankle fusion surgery usually requires a hospital stay of 1-3 days.

Immobilization

After surgery, the ankle is often placed in a cast or splint to keep it stable. The cast may extend beyond the knee to ensure no movement in the ankle joint. Some surgeons may use a removable boot or brace instead.

The shotel sword is a traditional Ethiopian sword characterized by its distinct sickle-shaped blade. It originated in the northern regions of Ethiopia and was primarily used by the Abyssinian Empire warriors, dating back to at least the 6th century. The unique crescent shape of the blade allows for effective hooking and trapping of an opponent’s weapon, making it a formidable tool in close-quarter combat. The shotel’s design is centered around quick maneuverability and offensive capabilities, often used in conjunction with a shield or another hand weapon. Today, the shotel sword is primarily considered a historical artifact and a symbol of Ethiopia’s rich martial heritage.
